What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a strong, secure and very long lasting way to replace missing or troublesome teeth or stabilise loose dentures. A titanium post is placed into your jaw, creating a fixed tooth root used to support a natural looking crown added on top. Titanium is very well tolerated by the body, and is able to fuse to the surrounding jaw bone over time to provide an incredibly solid and durable foundation.

Implants allow you to regain the look, feel and function of natural teeth and eliminate the worry that your new tooth will fail, slip or become loose. They provide vital support to your facial structure, stopping your gum from shrinking and preventing your remaining teeth from moving out of position. Implants can also greatly improve your quality of life and your self esteem. You can eat whatever you choose confidently once more, and will no longer feel the need to hide your smile in photographs or at special occasions.

What does dental implant treatment involve?

At your implant consultation appointment, we find out a bit more about your ideal results and the possibilities for treatment, ensuring you are suitable for dental implants. We are very happy to answer any questions you may have, and begin to plan your treatment if you decide to go ahead.

We use the latest advanced digital technology to take detailed scans and images of your teeth. These enable us to accurately plan the optimum position for your implant(s) and ensure your treatment will go precisely as intended.

During your implant surgery, the titanium implant is put into holes in your jaw. We use local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable during the procedure, and you can opt to have sedation too if this is appropriate for you. We screw the implant in and the gum is stitched so it heals over the top.

Your implant takes around 3-4 months to heal and fuse with the bone in your jaw. In some cases, to protect your gum, we can fit a temporary tooth on top.

When your implant has fully healed, we fit your final restoration on top, which could be a crown, bridge or denture depending on your preference. We give you some advice on how to look after your dental implant and leave you to start showing off your smile!

Frequently Asked Questions
Is dental implant treatment painful?

We use local anaesthetic during dental implant surgery to ensure you are comfortable during the procedure. If you are feeling particularly worried or anxious, we may suggest sedation would be appropriate for you. After treatment, it is normal to experience some discomfort, and this can be managed with pain relief as advised. Implant treatment is often less painful than having a tooth extraction, and most patients are able to return to their usual routines the next day.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants can last forever. However, statistics tell us they have an average life span depending on several factors including how they are looked after, your medical history, smoking, gum disease etc. The restoration that the implant supports, such a crown, bridge or denture, may need to be replaced over time due to natural wear and tear.

Will other people be able to tell I have dental implants?

Not at all. Dental implants truly are the next best thing to natural teeth, and other people will not be able to tell they are there. The crown that your implant supports can be made the exact colour and shape of your existing teeth to blend flawlessly into your smile.

How do I keep my implants clean and healthy?

The best way to keep your dental implants clean is to treat them just as you do your natural teeth. As they are made from artificial materials, your implants are invulnerable to decay or cavities, but you will still need to brush and floss to keep the gum surrounding the implant, as well as your existing natural teeth, healthy and problem free.

Will I find it hard to talk with dental implants?

You will most likely find it easier to talk with dental implants fitted! Having a gap in your teeth can cause you to have problems with speaking, including an unwanted lisp. As your implant is fused to your jawbone, it provides completely solid support and helps you speak clearly and with confidence.

Are there any alternatives to dental implants?

If you have one or more missing teeth, you may also consider restoring your full smile with a bridge or denture. We are happy to discuss all the options for replacing your missing teeth and find the best one for you.
